I tend to like things more neutral sounding, and add character either from the instrument itself, or via a distinct plugin or plugins designated for those duties.

You could replace a lot of those compressors with one purchase of AA Tiger.Won't touch AA with a 10' pole, but I might be adding Trackcomp to my list, if I can pick a few things (like compressors) to sell to help fund it.
